This article explores the concept of targeted reproductive management and how dairy producers can balance technology and hormone protocols to improve breeding outcomes. It reviews strategies such as using Co-Synch protocols guided by estrous intensity from activity monitoring systems, as well as approaches that prioritize breeding on observed estrus while still utilizing fertility protocols for first service. The article also examines real-world results from 49 farms using activity monitoring systems but differing in their first-service breeding strategies, comparing estrus detection and timed AI. Key benefits, challenges, and opportunities of each approach are discussed to help producers identify the most effective strategy for their operations.
